New to karting, need setup advice

to give a brief introduction, my name is Tim, and i just broke down and bought my 4 year old a kid kart. He'll be 5 in October, so i wanted to get it now, so i can set it up properly, and get him some parking lot practice!
The kart is one of those from gatormoto, and i know it isn't rule book complient yet. I couldn't pass up $550 for the kart, though, and figured he can practice on the Honda clone engine until i track down a good C50 or C51 for next spring.
I guess the biggest question i have, is whether or not this frame is OK for WKA/IKF and the likes. he'll be doing mostly autocross in Joliet, IL and with the Champaign County SCCA, as well as road course races in Norway, IL and Springfield, IL. i'm not sure of their rules yet, but i want this to be a fairly universally spec'd kart.
i know the engine is going to need to be replaced, but the other thing that has me wondering is the brakes. i see most new karts come with mechanical, but this has hydraulic. are hydraulic brakes alright for WKA/SCCA events?
i'd also like some information on where i can get decent pedal extenders that won't break the bank. he's about 3-4" shy of the back of the seat when he has the pedals all the way down..meaning i'll probably need extenders and seat padding to allow his knees to be slightly bent. i also have heard of people getting helmets one or two sizes big, and using thicker lining pads so their kids can grow into the helmet without having to buy a new one every so often. any suggestions on how i should go about doing that?
thanks for all the help! i hope i can get him out there and have some fun!!

Kevin offers Noonan pedal extensions on the web site. I use these with my son and they work really well. THe item bolts right to your floor pan and includes the pedals and all connections you should need.
From the CRP home page look for Noonan Kart Products near the bottom of the left side menu. I just checked and the system is $159.00. You might also ask Kevin if he knows of any used ones for sale.

I have seen a clever inexpensive solution to this problem , Take a piece of PVC 3" the width of your peddles cut 4 slots in it to place a hose clamp through slots and around peddles then tighten clamps and there you go peddle extensions cheap . put screw clamp inside of PVC and all you will see is clamp. Etch with PVC cleaner then painted PVC to match Kart color works great. TO cut slots I drilled 1/4" holes side by side then filed to get a nice straight slot the width of clamp Hope this helps . you can make the PVC longer and slot the end to slide over the peddle riser for added strength

right on...i'll probably have some machined for me at work (work in a machine shop as an electrician)..if not, the PVC sounds like a cheap method.
so what about the hydraulic brakes...are those WKA legal for kid karting? and another question...i'm assuming the helmets must be Snell rated?

Yes Hyd. brakes are legal , , Also as far as Helmets Helmets for WKA ,must be Snell 2005 rated . I will say the only place I have ever had a Helmet checked is at National events .I personally would not go with a helmet with out some sort of Snell rating . I realise your just starting out but I would say to consider one of the new neck braces . . If you do some reseach as far as the benefits of these neck braces you will see that They prevent over extension of neck front and back as well as compression . Foam collars can actually act as a fulcrum further extending the neck both front and back . Vahallia 360 is a nice brace and comfortable also the EVS is worth looking into ..

i'll definitely look into that neck brace! although i'm doing all this on a tight budget (my wife and i are both full time college students!), i won't skimp on safety! i race autoX, myself..so i know having a good helmet is important. i was just wondering if there was a different rating for the helmets other than Snell, becuase it looks like most youth size helmets are not Snell rated

The kart you are talking about I bought myself for the same reason. Cheap!! Please measure the chassis length from rear axle to front spindle centerline. If it has not been changed in 1 1/2 yrs the kart is illegal except club races. Rule book states max wheelbase is 31". these use to be 32" if i am not mistaken.
These karts are also super heavy. Cut as much supports and cross members off the bumper and the extra one off the frame. Also remove the brake sheild and the brake disc itself. These two things alone weigh 10 pounds. Remove the sheild from the right side also if it still has one next to the axle. Good luck _________________ RY-MAN RACING
